Metronidazole tablets contain the active ingredient of the same name. It is used to treat infections caused by bacteria and protozoa. Metronidazole has proved to be a very effective weapon against diseases caused primarily by anaerobic bacteria. What is characteristic about this type of bacteria is that they do not require oxygen for growth and reproduction. Anaerobic bacteria cause infections in many areas of the body, e.g.: bones, intestines, gums, etc.
Metronidazole is also used to prevent infections after surgery, especially in the case of gynaecological and intestinal surgery. High doses of Metronidazole can also penetrate into the brain, which makes them useful in the treatment of abscesses.
Metronidazole is also used to treat protozoan infections causing:
- trichomoniasis (Trichomonas vaginalis)
- amoebiasis (Entamoeba histolytica)
- giardiasis (Giardia lamblia)
- stomach diseases and duodenal ulcers (Helicobacter pylori)
- bacterial vaginosis (Gardnerella vaginalis)
The effectiveness of Metronidazole in fighting specific microorganisms should be confirmed by means of a swab taken from the infected area.
Metronidazole is used in the treatment of diseases caused by the previously mentioned Helicobacter pylori. The presence of these bacteria is usually associated with gastric ulcers, which can be effectively treated after eliminating the pathogen. In such cases, Metronidazole is used in combination with appropriate inhibitors that reduce gastric acid secretion and help rebuild gastric microflora, which enables the antibiotic to be more effective.
