Valtrex

Valtrex is successfully used to treat the symptoms of genital herpes, cold sores, and shingles. Treatment with the use of Valtrex can result in a complete disappearance of symptoms within 24 hours of application.

The treatment may be used to relieve the symptoms of cold sores, or proactively, to eliminate unsightly skin changes – especially in exposed areas.

  • Valtrex brings fast relief from symptoms of cold sores, genital herpes, or herpes zoster (shingles)
  • it may be used as an emergency therapy, or for prevention
  • Valtrex has the form of easy-to-use tablets of 500 mg

What are the benefits of using Valtrex?

Valtrex tablets contain the active ingredient called valaciclovir. In the human body, valaciclovir is almost completely converted into acyclovir and valine. Acyclovir selectively inhibits the proliferation of the herpes virus, demonstrating in vitro activity against: herpes simplex viruses (HSV) type 1 and type 2, varicella and zoster virus (VZV), cytomegalovirus (CMV), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), and the human herpes virus type 6 (HHV-6).

The use of Valtrex can help to achieve high efficiency in the treatment of symptoms of genital herpes, facial herpes, and zoster. Even though the complete removal of the herpes virus from the body is impossible, the use of Valtrex brings rapid relief from painful blisters and skin irritation. The treatment can also significantly shorten the disease by forcing the virus into hibernation.

How does Valtrex herpes treatment work?

Valtrex contains the active ingredient called valaciclovir hydrochloride. This substance displays potent antiviral activity which limits the expansion of the virus.

Regular adoption of Valtrex can also reduce the risk of transmitting genital herpes to sexual partners, provided one follows the principles of safe sex (use of condoms). However, sexual contacts should be avoided for as long as there are sores present on the reproductive organs.

Valtrex is also used to prevent infections caused by cytomegalovirus (CMV) in patients with organ transplants of, for instance, kidneys. CMV virus belongs to the herpes group which in healthy individuals produces mild symptoms similar to the common cold, but in people with impaired immunity to the presence of the virus can prove quite dangerous. In such cases, treatment using Valtrex is used.

Who can use Valtrex?

Valtrex containing valaciclovir can be taken by most patients over the age of 18. It can be used for effective treatment of herpes lesions on the face, in the genital area, or the treatment of shingles. Valtrex should not be used in the case of intolerance to valaciclovir.

How should Valtrex herpes treatment be used?

  • Valtrex herpes tablets can be taken during a meal, but this is not necessary
  • The dose and frequency of adoption depends on the current condition of the patient. You should follow your doctor recommendations, or the instructions in the leaflet accompanying the product.
  • Valtrex should be taken at regular intervals, and the treatment should always be completed, even if the symptoms of infection have disappeared beforehand.
  • If you forget to take any of the doses, you should take it as soon as possible, unless it is already time for your next tablet. In such a case, you should skip the missed dose, and continue treatment according to the current schedule – do not take a double dose to compensate for the forgotten tablet.
  • Patients taking Valtrex as a preventative measure should follow the dosage prescribed by their doctor.

What is the recommended dose of Valtrex?

Valtrex’s dosage depends on the type and severity of the symptoms of herpes:

  • Genital herpes

In the event of using Valtrex tablets for the treatment of genital herpes (herpes simplex), you should take two 500 mg tablets each day for 10 consecutive days (a set of 2×10 tablets), and in the case of a relapse of the disease, take one tablet a day for 3-5 days (a set of 1×10 tablets). If the disease proves to be extremely resistant to treatment, it may be necessary to take the tablets every day until the symptoms disappear (a set of 2×42 tablets – enough for a three-month treatment). If the virus has a tendency to recur no more than 10 times a year, then it is recommended to take Valtrex tablets prophylactically every 6 – 12 months.

  • Facial herpes

For the symptoms of herpes resulting from the first attack of the herpes simplex virus, two 500 mg tablets should be taken for up to 10 days (a set 2×10 tablets). The re-emergence of symptoms of viral activity should be treated with tablets of the same dosage, but only for a period of 3-5 days (a set of 1 x 10 tablets).

  • Treatment of shingles

In the treatment of shingles (herpes zoster), it is recommended to take two 500 mg Valtrex tablets three time a day for one week, or 6 tablets per day for 7 days (a set of 1×42 tablets).

Valtrex is most effective when it is used from the very beginning of the viral infection.
